Support that fits the person, not the other way around.

Good therapy does not start with a category. It starts with a person.

Riverway Therapy provides counselling for children, teens, adults and families, with individualized support shaped around needs, strengths and circumstances.

Sessions may include individual or family therapy, play therapy interventions, canine-assisted therapy and neurodiversity-affirming mental health support.

WAYS I CAN SUPPORT YOU

Therapy can look different for different people.

You do not need to know which type of therapy you need before you reach out. These are some of the ways support can take shape at Riverway.

Adult Individual Therapy

ADULTS

One-on-one counselling in a comfortable therapy space, in person or online.

Child & Adolescent Therapy

CHILDREN & TEENS

A space to express feelings, work through big emotions and explore difficult experiences at a pace that fits the young person.

Family Therapy & Parent/Caregiver Support

PARENTS & CAREGIVERS

Every child, teen and family is different. Consultation sessions bring parents and caregivers into the planning for a child or teen, so the plan fits your family.

One-on-one sessions are also available for parents and caregivers who are feeling overwhelmed or who simply want a space of their own.

Play Therapy Interventions

ALL AGES AND ABILITIES

Developmentally appropriate ways for children to express themselves and work through emotions and challenges when words are not enough.

Please note that a canine helper may or may not be brought into a session. This will vary according to individual needs or therapy goals.

Consulting & System Navigation

SYSTEM & SCHOOL SUPPORT

Parent consultations and support to help families find their way through school, community and other systems.

Peer consultation is also available for other social workers, therapists and professionals with school or system questions. This is informal peer consultation, not clinical supervision.

Neurodiversity & Mental Health Supports

CHILDREN, TEENS & ADULTS

Support for children, teens and adults with ADHD, anxiety, autism and learning disabilities, centered on the belief that there is no ‘fixing’ at Riverway, just growing and learning in a space of belonging.

INDIVIDUAL, CHILD & FAMILY COUNSELLING

A safe place to have a voice at every age.

CHILD & ADOLESCENT THERAPY

Support that respects the young person.

Child and teen therapy can take different forms. Sometimes a young person works with us individually. At other times, a parent or caregiver may be involved. The goal is to create a safe place where the young person can feel heard, accepted and supported.

FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS

Parents and Caregivers, you are an important part of the therapeutic process. While it is always important to ensure therapy is a safe, confidential space for your child/teen, this does not mean you are left out of the loop. We have a collaborative process in place to ensure that you can check-in, receive feedback or resources, and confirm that your child is receiving the needed care and support that brought you to Riverway in the first place.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Space to explore what is happening.

Individual counselling sessions at Riverway give clients a place to explore thoughts, feelings and experiences with a trained therapist. Sessions are client-centred and strengths-based, with the approach shaped around individual needs.

FAMILY & PARENT/CAREGIVER SUPPORT

Because families are part of the picture.

Parents and caregivers may also need a space where it is ok to share your experiences freely and find support, not judgement. Too often they are silently suffering under the weight of all the ‘things’. This can be your space too.

PLAY THERAPY INTERVENTIONS

Sometimes words are not the best place to begin.

Children do not always have the words for a feeling or experience. They should not have to.

Play is a child’s first language. Children process information, experiences, learning and trauma differently than an adult would. They don’t always need to “talk about it” to feel better. In fact, sometimes talking can make things worse. Play therapy allows children to process events and experiences in a developmentally appropriate and safe environment. Our work with children often begins with child directed play and ends with the ‘stuff’ or the skills. When children are ready to ‘talk’ this is often an indicator that they have processed an event or experience in a healthy manner.

Play therapy interventions give children developmentally appropriate ways to express themselves and work through emotions and challenges. A play room is available for Riverway's younger clients.

Canines may also be included in sessions for younger children. However, this is not always the case, and for some of Riverway’s younger clients, sessions are scheduled at a time when a canine will not be at the office. This allows a child to freely express all emotions — even the ones that aren’t always fun for schools or parents.

Support can also be adapted creatively for virtual sessions when appropriate.

CANINE-ASSISTED THERAPY

Research-backed. Dog-approved.

Therapy with a little help from Riverway's canine helpers.

Sue conducted award-winning research on canine-assisted therapy in an Ontario school board during her studies at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Sue's work began at Riverway with canines assisting select clients only. However, in only a few short years Sue has come to realize that she is the side kick and the dogs are the stars. When a therapist partners with a canine they are very much a team. Not all clients meet all dogs. And very rarely will a client meet more than one dog.

In all sessions and all interactions the therapist is facilitating the connection. Canine-assisted therapy is different from other therapy dog encounters - with the therapist at the heart of the interaction being the main difference.

Canine-assisted sessions are offered in person in North Bay.

NEURODIVERSITY & MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

Support without asking you to be someone else.

Riverway provides mental health support to children, teens and adults, including people living with ADHD, anxiety and autism.

The focus is on understanding the person, recognizing strengths and creating room for connection, belonging and acceptance.

Therapy at Riverway is collaborative. We work alongside children, teens and their families, so everyone has a voice in the plan.

“Along the way we build life skills that genuinely help, but you do not have to change who you are to learn them.” Kids hear it directly: it is okay to be ADHD.

The goal is not simply to fit in. It is to feel that you belong.
